The underwater city is amazing, but you need to constantly monitor it: fix leaks, scrub floors, repair communications. This was done by those who were hired to build the city. However, it did not provide for the protection of the rights of workers, they became poor, and bitterness appeared. Everything was aggravated by the discovery of ADAM – a substance that changes genes and gives superpowers. When it fell into the hands of the dissatisfied, Rapture turned into hell, into a fighting arena. Moreover, ADAM was addictive and drove you crazy, disfiguring your body and spirit.
It was extracted from a special sea mollusk. A profitable business, despite all the side effects of ADAM. After all, advertising won’t talk about harm, and for the sake of superpowers, many are ready to take any risk. The demand was huge, there weren’t enough shellfish. It was experimentally found that a slug produces 10-20 times more ADAM if it is introduced into the stomach of a person, preferably a girl who has not reached puberty. They were called Little Sisters. At first, slugs were implanted into orphans. But they are not infinite… The unfortunate parents were now frightened not only by mad mutants. The worst thing was to recognize the recently missing daughter in Little Sister.
However, this was not enough for unscrupulous businessmen. "We need more gold!"- they would shout if they were the heroes of another game. Any normal person would be horrified by the situation developing in the city: civil war, drugged drug addicts killing each other and attacking ordinary townspeople, who are gradually also turning into mutants. There is a magnificent carnival in the hall, and around the corner someone’s remains are lying. But entrepreneurs saw this only as a valuable resource – after all, the corpses of these drug addicts were pumped full of ADAM! Little Sisters have been improved a little..

But I see something else: she bites into the nipple at the other end of the syringe and, gurgling disgustingly with her throat, absorbs the liquid extracted from the dead. The mollusk in her stomach will process all this into a new portion of ADAM.
Now imagine how a mutant feels watching all this. Do you think it’s disgust?? Haha, of course not. Thirsty and withdrawal symptoms. After all, Little Sister for him is a balloon filled to the brim with ADAM. And although the slug instantly heals Sister’s wounds (she can survive even under water), she still cannot resist the crowd of super-drugs tearing her apart to get to the mollusk.
The girls needed guards. New experiments began – on people who accidentally ended up in the city, on criminals and political prisoners who decided that this way they would get freedom. The defender had to discourage anyone from attacking Sister. The first Big Daddies – the Alpha series – were endowed with supernatural abilities with the help of ADAM and dressed in durable diving suits, fortunately there were many of them left after the construction of the city. However, how can one force a person to risk himself for the sake of a disgusting creature that seeks out the dead?? The consciousness of the Big Daddies also had to be changed in order to make protecting the Little Sisters the only meaning of their lives. Even the defenders are deprived of their voices due to modified vocal cords. The Alpha series turned out to be not very successful, since each defender became attached to a specific Sister (and she to him) and after her death became completely uncontrollable.
They began to use special pheromones, and from now on every Little Sister felt boundless trust in any Big Daddy. She affectionately called him “Mr. Bubbles”, and in return he showed truly fatherly care. In her distorted perception, the diver appeared as a knight in shining armor. But in fact, this was no longer just a man in armor, unlike the Alpha series. Who is he without his suit?? This is no longer recognizable, since the underwater suit and the man were made one by merging meat and metal. They stopped giving supernatural abilities to Big Daddies; now ADAM was used only to increase their physical power. Two-meter thugs in the heaviest armor could repel the most serious attack.
Throwing yourself at Little Sister under Daddy’s protection is suicide. Who else but me should know about this?! Hearing footsteps that shake the floors (especially impressive when Daddy is walking somewhere above you), and a prolonged “whale” roar, it’s better to get out of the way altogether if you don’t want to get acquainted with the giant drill that replaces Daddy’s right hand. A spherical helmet with eight small portholes slowly turns towards danger. But this slowness is deceptive. A crushing jerk – and bloody fragments are already flying from the drill. A heavy kick – and the skull under the pressure of a rusting steel boot turns into a mess of brain and bone fragments. If you meet another type of Big Daddies – dressed in more familiar spacesuits and armed with long-range riveting hammers instead of a drill, then you won’t even be able to approach Little Sister. The defender will use huge bolts to pin any troublemaker to the wall.
So the Big Daddies and Little Sisters wandered through the halls and streets of the city at the bottom of the ocean. Someone didn’t pay attention to them. Someone frowned in disgust. Some believed that these were mechanisms and not living beings – out of naivety or wanting to reassure themselves. Then all these people died or became mutants, and the Sisters and Daddies still continued to do their work, accompanied by loud children’s laughter.
